Reil, S·CAB, 2026

Reil is focused on assessing the feasibility of making a statement about the aluminium fabrication process for a chair. S·CAB is an outdoor furniture manufacturer with a dedicated facility for in-house aluminium work. We wanted to take advantage of its capacity and an Italian artisanal spirit to make something simple yet challenging. The Original idea was to make the entire chair out of a single aluminium profile. We connected them, bent them, and we worked on all standard fabrication processes to make it work. It was suited with a ladder seat and backrest in the same profiles, celebrating the mono-materiality challenge. We then pushed it further by tailoring the seat and back surfaces using aluminium pressing. It would further reduce material consumption while simplifying manufacturing. Adding bumps helped surface reinforcement and heat dissipation. We also developed another model with a seat made of textile webbing to enable a range of use cases. It would not have been possible to achieve this goal without the enormous input from all parties, which has allowed us to continue challenging its manufacturing. Lastly, but not least, we used R70 post-consumer-recycled alloy to support environmentally responsible manufacturing.
